I have chosen to call these sculptures Sea Friends and it is in the medium clay/pottery. I chose to do this project because it reminds me that you do not need many people in your life. Growing up my dad told me to make friends. This always made me frustrated because I had friends just not ones, I could tell everything too, in elementary school I thought I had that, but I realized that it was only one sided. I was always there for her, but she was never there for me.
Coming over to Larimore for my freshman year I knew I wanted to be popular like many people and have lots of friends. I soon found two girls I thought were going to be my friends forever. I just did not fit in with them though they have been friends forever and I had no chance. We were never a trio it was just always them spending time together and me in school tagging along with them like a lost dog. Towards the end of the year, I found two girls that were not even friends, and I was like the glue to them. We would spend as much time together as we could second semester and into the summer. Going into my sophomore year I was still the glue, there were a couple augments here and there, but it was all good. I did not realize till one moved away that they only spent time together when I was there. The two of us that were left never had time to hang out just because we were both so busy. I would have never imagined we could change so much in a summer, by the time junior year rolled around we were not close. I just could not stand lying and her never listening to my problems. Lately I have been spending time with one of the girls from freshman year. We are happy, and I feel comfortable talking to her about anything.
I used contrast when sculpting the sea friends in assorted sizes. Contrast can help create a FOCAL POINT in a work of art by placing CONTRASTING ELEMENTS next to each other. When placed next to each other, CONTRASTING ELEMENTS will grab your attention. Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side; in asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar. I used balance when keeping the sea friends proportional. I used texture on the turtles back to make it look like a shell. Texture is the surface quality that can be seen and felt. Textures can be rough or smooth, soft, or hard. Textures do not always feel the way they look; for example, a drawing of a porcupine may look prickly, but if you touch the drawing, the paper is still smooth. Forms are three-dimensional shapes, expressing length, width, and depth. Balls, cylinders, boxes, and triangles are forms. I used form while making the whole project.
Sadly, this is my last project. I am glad I chose to do what I loved one last time as you (Worden) as my art teacher. All the techniques I applied in my projects was all taught by you. At the end of the day, it was just muscle memory and you in my head pushing me forward. High school has taught me so much about life friendships, and sometimes you need to struggle to find the best in yourself.
