Its name is Peach the Starfish and is in the median black charcoal. I chose to do a starfish because I have always liked the saying “Great things come in small packages.” Starfish are small, harmless, and colorful. I know they do not look like much to most people, but they do to me. It makes me appreciate the little things because they are the best of all. For example, holding the door open for someone, picking up a piece of garbage, or volunteering in your community. I try to do all those things to hopefully make someone’s day or to make the world a better place. People underestimate the little things, but they make all the difference.
The element of value was used in blending the surroundings for the starfish. Value refers to dark and light paintings and drawings are made up of dark, light, and middle value areas. The difference between value is called value contrast. I use texture in making the little tentacles in the middle of the starfish. Texture is the surface quality that can be seen and felt. Textures can be rough, smooth, soft, or hard. Textures do not always feel the way they look; for example, a drawing of a porcupine may look prickly, but if you touch the drawing, the paper is still smooth.
The principal pattern was used with all five of the starfish on the page. Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the artwork. I used emphasis when sketching the one big starfish in the middle. Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually, the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area will be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.
It was hard to draw the starfish because I thought it had to be perfect. I kept over thinking and erasing because it wasn’t perfect. But then I reallied it didn’t have to be. Then I started to have fun with it.
Physically I really struggled because for most of my project I had a cast on my left hand and arm, so it really hurt to work on it. But I knew I had to power through it every day. But this project really helps me realize it doesn’t need to be perfect so i started to have fun with it.
This project fits perfectly in with my theme “under the sea. Peach the starfish is just one project, but it will correlate beautifully in my collection.
