Their names are Auntie Deb and Flow, and it is in the medium watercolor pen and ink. I chose to do these two fish because they remind me of a best friend. Best friends never leave each other. They might drift apart to find themselves, or in this case to get food, but they will always find each other again. I have personally gone through many experiences that I have needed a friend to help me through it and they have always been there. It does not matter how long you have been best friends, but they will always be there for you, if you find the right one. When people look at this piece of art, I want them to think that these two fish are never going to leave each other.
I emphasized with lines by outlining and defining the scales on the fish. Line is a mark with greater length than width. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal, straight, curved, thick or thin. I used space when trying to blend the sea around the fish. Space is the area between and around objects. The space around objects is often called negative space; negative space has shape. Space can also refer to the feeling of depth. Real space is three-dimensional; in visual art when we can create the feeling or illusion of depth, we call it space.
I applied proportion by making the fish varied sizes but take up the same about of room on the page. Proportion is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body. I used balance when using the watercolor to make everything the same shade instead of having dark spots. Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side; in asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar.
This project was not as stressful as the last. I started by sketching the two fish with a very light-yellow water colored pencil. Last year I made the mistake of using a regular pencil on it. I feel I have improved in my art. I mostly used watercolor colored pencil to watercolor the fish, but for the background I just used regular pallet watercolor. To emphasize the outline of the fish, the scales, eyes, and mouth with a fine tip black pen. Overall, I enjoyed creating this piece of art, and one day I would like to recreate it.
